ADSU OFF-CAMPUS STUDENTS AND SECURITY CHALLENGES! BY: AMOS YAUBETA SUNDAY

ADSU  OFF-K STUDENTS AND SECURITY CHALLENGES! BY: AMOS YAUBETA SUNDAY
I do not intend to comment on this particular issue but it is such a burning matter that needs to be addressed! It is not uncommon to hear stories such as; my phone was snatched while on my way home in the evening, I went to the ATM at the small gate, on my way back, they either snatched or robbed and took away the money, or our compound was burgled and took away  my valuable belongings etc these are the voices of students living off-k; although those living in the hostels have their stories to tell!  One cannot rest from mental battle after hearing all these stories - I ask the following questions: Who are the perpetrators of these vices? Who is responsible for curbing these menace? Has anyone done anything about it? What shall we do as a community to minimize and eventually but put an end to all these?
First, let us take these facts: that students do not stay off-k for luxury with few exceptions though, the number of students in this institution is more than the carrying capacity of the accommodation provided by the school, sometimes the students are guilty of being complacent, insufficient security personnel within the school area or they are not posted to some spots that are serving as crime windows etc...
Secondly, crime especially around Mubi area is on the increase every waking moment; recently a students  compound around GRA was burgled at night and the actors went away with valuables. Another instance though old and we may have forgotten about it, a student who was murdered in cold blood; we are not immune, any one can be a victim. So, what do we do?
There are five stakeholders: the students, the Students' Union Government, the school management, the Landlords and the government law enforcement agencies; all must work together having especially established facts on why students live off-k! The students on their part should be more vigilant and must work together by first knowing who your neighbours are, observe their movements around the compound - this makes it easier to detect any strange move! We shouldn't be too comfortable! The SUG should in pursuance of its aims, liaise with the remaining stakeholders in ensuring a safety environment for its members.
Furthermore, when this is done; possibilities are that measures may be taken that will not be convenient and favourable to all but we should accept them to achieve a common purpose.
Finally, I wish sum up that the students living off-k need security as much as those in the hostels and it is a matter of collective responsibility and a duty to the union leaders in liaison with the school management and law enforcement officials - in close interface with the landlords.
